Cruise Holiday Guide: Helping You Cruise With Confidence

Whether you're considering your first cruise or simply looking to understand more about cabin types, cruise fares and life onboard, this guide brings together some of the questions I'm asked most often.

From understanding what's included and choosing the right cabin to embarkation day tips and cruise FAQs, you'll find practical advice designed to help you cruise with confidence.

Why So Many People Fall In Love With Cruising

For many travellers, a first cruise quickly becomes the first of many.

The opportunity to visit multiple destinations without constantly packing and unpacking, combined with excellent dining, entertainment and the convenience of having so much included in one holiday, makes cruising an attractive option for couples, families and solo travellers alike.

Whether you're considering a short European sailing, a Caribbean adventure or a voyage further afield, understanding how cruising works can help you choose the right ship, itinerary and onboard experience for the way you like to travel.

Why Choose A Cruise Holiday?

You Can Visit Multiple Destinations In One Trip

Cruising Takes You To Places Other Holidays Can't

You Can Visit Multiple Destinations In One Trip

One of the biggest advantages of cruising is the ability to experience several destinations within a single holiday.

Rather than choosing just one place to stay, your itinerary can take you from city to island, port to coastline, or country to country while your accommodation travels with you.

You Only Unpack Once

You Can Visit Multiple Destinations In One Trip

Cruising makes multi-destination travel feel much easier.

You can settle into your cabin at the start of the holiday and enjoy each new destination without repeatedly packing, unpacking, changing hotels or managing luggage along the way.

Some destinations are best experienced from the water.

From dramatic fjords and remote islands to scenic coastlines and expedition routes, cruising can give you access to places and perspectives that are difficult to experience in the same way by land.

Everything You Need Is In One Place

There's A Cruise For Every Type Of Traveller

There's A Cruise For Every Type Of Traveller

A cruise combines accommodation, dining, entertainment, activities and transport between destinations into one holiday.

That makes it a convenient option for travellers who want variety without having to plan every element separately.

One of the biggest misconceptions about cruising is that it suits only one type of traveller.

In reality, there are family-friendly ships, adults-only sailings, luxury voyages, river cruises, expedition itineraries and relaxed mainstream options, each offering a very different experience.

The Journey Becomes Part Of The Holiday

The Journey Becomes Part Of The Holiday

With cruising, travel time doesn't have to feel like lost time.

Scenic sail aways, sea days, river cruising, glacier viewing and coastal approaches can all become memorable parts of the holiday itself rather than simply the way you get from one place to another.

Understanding The Differences

While this guide provides a general overview, inclusions vary significantly between cruise lines and fare types. Some fares include drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities and shore excursions as standard, while others allow you to customise your holiday by adding only the extras that matter to you.

Understanding those differences can make a significant difference to overall value, which is why comparing cruises isn't always as straightforward as comparing the headline price.

That's where expert advice can make all the difference.

Which Cabin Is Right For You?

For many travellers, an inside cabin offers excellent value and allows more of the holiday budget to be spent on destinations, experiences and onboard activities. Modern inside cabins are comfortable, well-designed and ideal for guests who see their cabin as a place to relax and recharge.

✓ Often the most affordable cabin category

✓ Comfortable and practical for most itineraries

✓ Great value for travellers focused on the overall experience

Perfect for travellers who plan to spend most of their time exploring the ship and destinations.

An ocean view cabin offers the same comfort as an inside cabin, with the added benefit of natural daylight and views of the sea. For many guests, it provides the perfect balance between value and comfort.

✓ Natural light throughout your holiday

✓ Views of the ocean from your cabin

✓ Often represents excellent value for money

Perfect for travellers who enjoy a brighter cabin without stepping up to a balcony.

For many cruisers, a balcony cabin transforms the onboard experience. Whether you're enjoying room service breakfast, watching sail away or simply relaxing with a sea view, having your own private outdoor space can make the journey even more memorable.

✓ Private outdoor space to enjoy the views

✓ Ideal for scenic itineraries and sea days

✓ One of the most popular cabin choices

Perfect for couples and travellers who enjoy spending time in their cabin.

Suites offer additional space, enhanced comfort and a more premium onboard experience. Depending on the cruise line, they may also include exclusive benefits such as priority embarkation, concierge services, dedicated dining venues and access to private areas of the ship.

✓ More space to relax and unwind

✓ Additional perks and exclusive benefits

✓ Elevated service and premium experience

Perfect for travellers looking to make their cruise even more special.

Looking For Something A Little More Exclusive?

Discover The 'Ship Within A Ship' Experience

One of cruising's best-kept secrets is that some ships offer a premium experience within the wider ship itself. Often referred to as a "ship within a ship", these exclusive areas provide guests with access to private lounges, dedicated restaurants, exclusive sun decks and enhanced levels of service, while still allowing full access to all the facilities and entertainment the ship has to offer.

For many travellers, this offers the perfect balance. You can enjoy the atmosphere, variety and entertainment of a larger cruise ship, whilst also having access to quieter spaces, priority embarkation, concierge services and, in some cases, butler service. It's a particularly popular option for guests who enjoy a little extra privacy and personalised service without moving to a fully luxury cruise line.

Different cruise lines have their own versions of this concept, including The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Yacht Club and The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises. While the names and inclusions vary, the principle remains the same: a more exclusive and elevated experience that combines the best of both worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you're considering your first cruise, you're not alone. Here are answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often by first-time cruisers.

One of the most common concerns among first-time cruisers is seasickness. Modern cruise ships are equipped with advanced stabilisers designed to minimise movement, and many guests are pleasantly surprised by just how smooth cruising feels. While rough seas can occasionally occur, most passengers experience little or no discomfort during their voyage.

If you're concerned, there are several simple ways to reduce the likelihood of feeling unwell. Choosing a cabin located mid-ship on a lower deck can help minimise motion, while remedies such as Sea-Bands, acupressure wristbands, anti-nausea patches and over-the-counter medications are widely available. Many guests prefer these modern alternatives to traditional tablets, particularly if they're concerned about drowsiness.

For most travellers, seasickness turns out to be far less of an issue than they expected, especially on today's larger ships.

Not necessarily. While some cruise lines still offer formal or elegant evenings, most now embrace a much more relaxed approach. Smart-casual attire is perfectly acceptable for the majority of restaurants and venues, and participation in formal evenings is usually optional.

Many cruise lines also host themed events and parties throughout the cruise. These can include popular events such as White Night parties, 70s and 80s celebrations, Caribbean deck parties or themed evenings like Scarlet Night on Virgin Voyages. While many guests enjoy joining in, participation is entirely optional and there's never any pressure to dress up if you prefer not to.

The dress code and onboard atmosphere can vary significantly between cruise lines, which is why choosing the right cruise for your travel style is so important.

Cruises can offer exceptional value when you consider everything included in the fare. Accommodation, dining, entertainment and travel between destinations are typically included, making it easier to budget for your holiday and often providing excellent value compared to land-based travel.

Many cruise lines also include children's clubs, activities and entertainment suitable for all ages, while some premium cruise lines may include extras such as drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities and even selected shore excursions. The exact inclusions vary between cruise lines and fare types, which is why it's important to compare the overall value rather than simply looking at the headline price.

Absolutely. Many cruise lines offer family-friendly accommodation, children's clubs, dedicated activities and entertainment designed specifically for younger guests. The key is choosing the right cruise line and ship for your family's needs.

Cruises are also one of the most popular holiday choices for multi-generational families travelling together. Grandparents, parents, teenagers and younger children can all enjoy the same holiday while still having the freedom to spend time together or pursue their own interests throughout the day. With activities, dining options and entertainment suitable for all ages, cruising offers a level of flexibility that can be difficult to achieve with many land-based holidays.

Most cruise ships now offer a range of Wi-Fi packages, allowing guests to stay connected while at sea. Depending on the cruise line, these can range from basic packages suitable for emails and messaging through to premium packages capable of supporting video calls, social media and streaming services.

Many guests choose to disconnect completely and enjoy a break from the demands of everyday life, while others prefer the reassurance of staying in touch with family, friends or work. There is no right or wrong approach – one of the joys of cruising is having the freedom to choose.

It's also worth remembering that once your ship arrives in port, you'll often be able to connect using local Wi-Fi hotspots in cafés, restaurants and cruise terminals, or by using your mobile phone's roaming allowance where available. For many travellers, this provides the perfect balance between staying connected and truly switching off.

Yes. Many cruise lines now offer dedicated solo cabins, hosted meet-ups and social events designed specifically for solo travellers. Cruising can be an excellent way to explore the world independently while enjoying the security and convenience of an organised holiday.

Not always. Whether a drinks package represents good value depends on the cruise line, your itinerary and your personal preferences. While some guests appreciate the convenience of having drinks included throughout their holiday, others find paying as they go works out better.

It's also worth remembering that drinks packages aren't just about alcohol. Many cruise lines offer packages focused on soft drinks, speciality coffees, bottled water and premium teas. Some cruise lines, such as Virgin Voyages, take a different approach altogether by offering bar tabs rather than traditional drinks packages.

The right option will vary from person to person, which is why personalised advice can be particularly valuable. A package that represents excellent value for one traveller may be completely unnecessary for another.

Popular itineraries, family cabins and sought-after sailings can sell out well in advance. While last-minute deals occasionally exist, many travellers secure the best choice of cabins, itineraries and promotional offers by booking several months or even years ahead.

Booking early can also provide greater flexibility and peace of mind. In some cases, cruise lines may allow guests to take advantage of future price reductions before final payment, although policies vary significantly between cruise lines and fare types. This is another area where having expert advice can help ensure you're making the most of any opportunities available.
