Beach & Resort Holiday Guide: Not All Beach Holidays Are Created Equal

When many people picture a beach holiday, they imagine days spent beside the pool with a book and a cocktail in hand. While that's exactly what some travellers are looking for, modern beach and resort holidays can offer so much more.

From family resorts packed with activities and entertainment to romantic escapes, luxury retreats and adventure-filled destinations, the right resort can shape your holiday just as much as the destination itself. Two resorts in the same location can offer completely different experiences, which is why understanding what type of holiday you're looking for is often the best place to start.

This guide explores the different styles of beach and resort holiday available, helping you understand the options, identify what matters most to you and find the type of holiday that's the right fit for the way you like to travel.

Why Choose A Beach Or Resort Holiday?

Recharging means different things to different people.

For some it's a quiet beach and a good book, while for others it's diving beneath the waves, playing tennis or exploring somewhere new.

One of the reasons beach and resort holidays remain so popular is that they can make budgeting more straightforward.

Whether you're choosing half board, all-inclusive or premium all-inclusive, it's often easier to understand what's included and plan your spending before you travel.

Different Types Of Beach & Resort Holiday

The best beach holiday isn't necessarily about choosing the right destination, but choosing the experience that's right for you. Whether you're travelling with family, planning a romantic escape, looking for adventure or seeking exceptional luxury, understanding the different options available is often the best place to start.

The best family holidays strike a balance between keeping children entertained and allowing parents to relax and enjoy their time away. From splash parks and kids' clubs to spacious family accommodation and family-friendly beaches, the right resort can make travelling with children feel effortless.

Luxury means different things to different travellers. For some it's exceptional service and attention to detail, while for others it's a private pool, overwater villa or exclusive resort experience. The common theme is a holiday where every detail has been carefully considered.

✓ Exceptional accommodation and personalised service

✓ Premium all-inclusive and exclusive experiences

✓ Signature suites, villas and unique resort settings

Perfect for travellers seeking something truly special, whether for a celebration or simply because they value exceptional experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing a beach holiday isn't just about picking a destination. From resort styles and board basis options to budgeting and finding the right fit for your travel style, here are answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often.

One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is focusing entirely on the destination and resort while giving little thought to the room itself. In reality, your room choice can have a significant impact on the overall holiday experience, particularly for families, couples and those celebrating a special occasion.

While a standard room may be perfectly suitable for some travellers, others may benefit from a family room, interconnecting rooms, a swim-up room, club-level accommodation or a suite. Families should pay particular attention to bed configurations, as "family room" can mean very different things depending on the resort. What works perfectly for one family may not work at all for another.

My advice is always to choose a room based on how you'll use it rather than simply selecting the cheapest option. A small upgrade can sometimes make a surprisingly big difference to comfort, convenience and overall enjoyment.

Travellers often assume all-inclusive is automatically the best option, but the right board basis depends entirely on how you like to holiday. What works well for a family spending most of their time within the resort may be very different from what suits a couple planning to explore the local area.

Room Only and Bed & Breakfast offer maximum flexibility, while Half Board includes breakfast and an evening meal. Full Board adds lunch, making it a popular choice at larger resorts. All-Inclusive can provide excellent value for travellers who intend to make full use of the resort's restaurants, bars and facilities.

The best choice isn't always about finding the cheapest option. It's about matching the board basis to the type of holiday you're planning and ensuring you're paying for the things you'll actually use.

One of the most common misconceptions is that all all-inclusive resorts offer exactly the same experience. In reality, there can be significant differences between standard and premium all-inclusive packages, even within the same destination.

Standard all-inclusive will typically include meals, selected drinks and some entertainment, while premium all-inclusive may offer upgraded dining options, premium branded drinks, room service, speciality restaurants, enhanced activities or additional resort benefits. The exact inclusions vary considerably between resorts, which is why comparing packages isn't always straightforward.

Rather than assuming all-inclusive means the same thing everywhere, it's worth understanding exactly what's included. The right package can often deliver far better value and a more enjoyable holiday experience.

Many people still picture beach holidays as days spent beside the pool, but modern resorts offer far more variety than many travellers realise. Whether you're looking to stay active, learn something new or simply try a few different experiences, there is usually plenty to choose from.

Activities can range from tennis, golf, fitness classes and watersports to scuba diving, snorkelling, cultural excursions and wellness programmes. Some resorts focus heavily on activities and experiences, while others place greater emphasis on relaxation and downtime. Finding the right balance is often one of the most important parts of choosing the right resort.

In my experience, the best beach holidays often combine both activity and relaxation. Having the freedom to do as much or as little as you like is one of the reasons resort holidays remain so popular.

One of the biggest misconceptions about beach holidays is that summer is always the best time to travel. While school holidays are often the only option for families, couples and flexible travellers can sometimes enjoy better value, greater choice and a more relaxed atmosphere by travelling at other times of the year.

Many destinations enjoy excellent weather well beyond the traditional summer season. The Canary Islands, Dubai and much of the Caribbean are popular year-round, while destinations such as Greece, Turkey and the Balearics often offer warm temperatures well into spring and autumn. Travelling during shoulder seasons can also mean fewer crowds and a wider choice of accommodation.

The best time to travel depends on your priorities. Whether you're chasing sunshine, looking for the best value or hoping to avoid peak-season crowds, choosing the right destination at the right time can make a significant difference to your overall experience.

Travellers are often surprised by how quickly the best rooms, resorts and flight options can sell out, particularly during school holidays and peak travel periods. Waiting for a last-minute bargain can sometimes mean compromising on the things that matter most.

Popular family resorts, premium room categories and sought-after destinations often see strong demand many months in advance. Early booking can provide access to a wider choice of accommodation, better flight times and, in some cases, more attractive pricing. That said, there are also occasions where flexibility can create opportunities closer to departure.

My recommendation is to start looking earlier than you think you need to. Having more options available usually leads to a better holiday rather than simply a cheaper one.

After a long flight, most travellers are focused on getting to their resort and starting their holiday. While shared transfers can offer excellent value, they may involve waiting for other passengers and making multiple hotel stops along the way.

Private transfers provide a more direct experience, taking you straight to your accommodation without unnecessary delays. They can be particularly worthwhile for families with young children, travellers celebrating a special occasion or anyone arriving after a long-haul flight.

Neither option is right or wrong, but it's worth considering the overall holiday experience rather than simply the transfer cost. Sometimes arriving at your resort sooner and starting your holiday immediately can be worth the additional investment.

This is one of the most common questions travellers ask, but there is rarely a one-size-fits-all answer. The amount you'll need depends on your destination, board basis, planned activities and personal travel style.

A traveller staying in a premium all-inclusive resort may spend very little during their holiday, while someone staying on a Bed & Breakfast basis and dining out each evening will naturally need a larger budget. Excursions, spa treatments, watersports and shopping can also have a significant impact on overall spending.

The good news is that most beach holidays are relatively easy to budget for once you understand what's included. A little planning before you travel can help avoid surprises and ensure you're comfortable with your holiday budget from the outset.
